Twin screw extrusion (TSE) has been increasingly adopted by the pharmaceutical industry due to its exceptional mixing capability and efficiency. The twin screw extrusion process not only has been widely used to manufacture novel drug delivery systems, such as amorphous solid dispersion via thermal processing, but also emerged as an important continuous granulation technology for consistently producing high-quality standard and complex dosage forms. This presentation will discuss basic principles of the extruder design and twin screw extrusion process. It will also cover important product and process development considerations for both hot melt extrusion (HME) and continuous granulation. This presentation will illustrate the versatility of twin screw extruder and its successful applications in manufacturing solid dosage forms.
